Sharps Model 1851 box lock carbine in .52 cal with 21.5" round barrel. Carbine is serial numbered"848". Tang of frame stamped in 3 lines"C. SHARPS / PATENT / 1848". Barrel stamped in 2 lines"ROBBINS & / LAWRENCE" and primer door stamped in 3 lines"EDWARD MAYNARD / PATENTEE / 1845". Metal of carbine exhibits a gray surface with toning and some mottling. Long sling bar lacks ring. Wood exhibits heavy wear with digs and gouges with some wood loss near bottom of buttplate. Wrist area exhibits a crack.
