Poultney & Trimble carbine in .50 cal with 21.5" round barrel. Left side of frame stamped in 3 lines "MANUFACTURED BY/AM'N.M'CH'N.WKS./SPRINGFIELD.MASS", in 3 lines "ADDRESS/POULTNEY & TRIMBLE./BALTIMORE. U.S.A.", and in 2 lines "SMITH'S PATENT/JUNE 23. 1857". Carbine is serial numbered"436" Carbine has good bore. Metal surface exhibits some of its original bluing and casehardening and exhibits some extremely light surface rust. Buttplate exhibits some rust. Sling bar lacks ring. Wood is in good condition with some minor abrasions. Left side wood exhibits ordnance inspector's cartouche"LFR".
